I adore this time of year. Everything sparkles and glows. People run to and fro trying to bless others. Christmas shines during a season of short days and long nights. Television stations offer all kinds of specials from dance to singalongs to romance movies. All of these specials profess the “real” reason for holiday. Some say it’s love. Some say it’s giving. Some say it’s peace. However, all of these themes miss the mark.

2 Corinthians 5:21 declares, “For he (God) made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”

The King James Version of the Bible can be a little confusing. Here’s the six5mom explanation: Jesus, who was perfect, willingly humbled himself to be born in sinful human flesh. Why did he do this? For us. So, we might be delivered of our sin. So, we might have eternal life. So, we can enjoy a relationship with our Creator and Father. The context of Christ validates all of the above reasons.

Christmas is about love. The Father’s love shown when he sent his only son to be sacrificed for our sins.

Christmas is about giving. Jesus giving away his power and perfection to be born as a weak human baby.

Christmas is about peace. The peace forged between God and us through Jesus’s death on the cross.

I hope you enjoy this holiday and all the wonderful trappings. Decorate garishly. Shop til you drop. Watch all the Hallmark movies. But remember, the true reason for the season: God humbled himself to be born as a fragile baby for our salvation.
