Many people describe Lamentations as a depressing book. When I sit down to read the Word, it’s not the first (or second, or third) one that’s leaps to mind. However, I find Lamentations to be a book that’s filled with hope. Yes, it points out the hardships we face in life, but it also emphasizes the solution to those problems. It reminds us that this world is temporary, and we are promised a better one.

I’ve written about the temptation to focus on circumstances during hard times. But I find that I focus on my circumstances during good times as well. I get lost in the busyness of homeschooling, home life, and ministry and forget that this life is temporary. My focus everyday should not be on the everyday things, but on my eternal hope in Christ Jesus. That hope should flow through all I do. It should be my motivation in all things. My son should feel it when we homeschool. I should feel it as I mop and dust. And the people to whom I minister should feel it in my words and actions.

Join me for the next few weeks as I memorize words of hope from the book of Lamentations. I’ve already memorized Lam 3:23, but it’s a great one to read before starting this unit.

“I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!'” Lam 3:24
